Experience History

Matsudaira Toshogu ShrineHISTRICAL SPOT

Matsudaira Toshogu Shrine

Tokugawa Ieyasu, one of the most distinguished warlords in the history of Japan, is enshrined in this relatively small yet awe-inspiring shrine. His ancestor Matsudaira Chikauji ruled the domain where Matsudaira Toshogu Shrine was built. At the back of the precincts there is the Ubuyu-no-ido well. As a new-born baby, Ieyasu is said to have been bathed with water drawn from the well. When you pass under the torii gate and walk into the haiden oratory lying beyond it, don’t forget to look up at the ceiling—it’s completely covered with 108 colorful lacquer paintings of seasonal flowers. They are breathtakingly beautiful.
* Free admission. Viewing the ceiling painting is 200 yen.
* Credit card not accepted.

Kogetsu-in TempleHISTRICAL SPOT

Kogetsu-in Temple

This ancestral temple of the Matsudaira clan also has close ties with the Tokugawas, another influential family that shared the same lineage and inherited the shogunate in Edo. Thanks to the substantial support and protection of these two powerful families, the temple has retained its original appearance for over 600 years. Kogetsu-in has several cultural assets associated with the history of the two families, and within the precincts there is a Matsudaira family cemetery where Matsudaira Chikauji is buried. The current gate and main hall were constructed in 1641 by the third shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu. The temple’s tranquil hilltop location offers a panoramic view of Matsudaira village, and as you stroll through the temple grounds you can also enjoy a variety of natural scenery, including cherry blossoms in spring and red maple leaves in autumn.
* Free admission.
