Otaki Gorge
Otaki Gorge
Otaki Gorge is a tranquil hiking spot located between the city of Toyota and Matsudaira-go. The 1.8-kilometer gorge is 148 meters deep and was made by the swift flow of the Nio River into the Tomoe River further downstream. The western end of the gorge is near Myoshoji Temple. On either side of the river is an observation deck: the Fudosan Observatory on one side and the Fukuroga Castle Observatory on the other. Both have sweeping views of the valley below. Walking trails follow the river, leading further up the gorge to the east to the secluded Utaishi Park and Otaki Lake.
The dense tree cover in the gorge keeps the area near the river shady and cool, somewhat like a rainforest. Along with the running water, it creates the ideal conditions for moss to grow on tree trunks, rocks, and the bridges over the river. Even the large old rocks in the river are covered with moss, which flourishes in the undisturbed, moist environment.
A round-trip walk from the entrance of the gorge up to Otaki Lake and back takes roughly three hours. Near the lake is a large park with a barbecue area and the striking red Otaki Lake Bridge. The gorge is noted for its beauty throughout the year, but is particularly popular in autumn for its brilliant maple foliage and in spring for its plum and cherry blossoms.
Otaki Lake Park
Otaki Lake Park is located at the eastern end of Otaki Gorge, between the city of Toyota and Matsudaira-go. Otaki Lake is an artificial lake created by damming the Nio River that flows through Otaki Gorge. The walk to the park from the entrance to the gorge takes roughly an hour, but there are also parking lots within a 10-minute walk of the lake.
In contrast to the western (lower) end of the gorge, which has narrow paths covered by trees, the Otaki Lake area is brighter and more open. The park is a favorite spot for outdoor barbecues, especially in autumn when the leaves on the surrounding maple trees turn bright orange and red. From winter through spring, Japanese camellias, plum trees, and cherry trees are in bloom.
Otaki Lake Bridge is a 90-meter red arched bridge leading to the park and offers a clear view of the dam and the river beyond it. Further north of the lake is a smaller bridge leading to the Nio River rapids and the Miyagawa walking trail. The path gives an up-close view of the rushing water and the towering rocks in the river. Floating through the rapids is possible if wearing appropriate swimming and safety gear.

Ogyu Castle Site
Toyota-Area
Ogyu Castle was a large mountain fortress that played a significant role in local armed conflicts from the 1400s to the late 1500s. Its site is located approximately 3 kilometers west of central Matsudaira-go, on a hill some 200 meters above sea level with views toward the city of Toyota and the plains of Nishi-Mikawa. The first known fort on the hill was established by a local warlord named Nagasaka Shinzaemon, who was soon forced to vacate it in favor of Matsudaira Nobumitsu (1404–1488) when the Matsudaira samurai family extended its influence south and west from Matsudaira-go. Nobumitsu’s grandson Norimoto (1446–1537) was eventually put in charge of the fortress, which he expanded and turned into the stronghold of his own branch of the family. This Ogyu Matsudaira family rose in local prominence in the mid-1500s, often fighting other branches of the Matsudaira family for territory and influence. Their strategically located castle overlooked the intersection of two major roads as well as a river. It was protected by dry moats dug into the hillside. Its winding approach and koguchi (“tiger mouth”) entrance incorporated earthen walls and ramparts to allow defenders to look down on any invaders. Parts of these defensive structures are still intact. Watchtowers stood on the ramparts on both sides of the approach, which winds between several giant boulders that were used as natural fortifications. The castle keep is thought to have been located on the flattened area near the top of the hill, though what that structure looked like is not clear. On the edge of the summit sits another large boulder that doubles as a lookout. Along the northern side of the hill are remains of narrow terraces fortified with stone that could have functioned as small dams used to collect water for the castle. The largest flattened plot of land within the castle’s perimeter is south of the main hill and may have been the site of the Ogyu Matsudaira residence. Considering that Ogyu Castle is thought to have been abandoned in the late 1500s, the castle site has been relatively well preserved. It provides insight into what Japanese castles were like before the widespread use of multi-story keeps (tenshu) and high stone walls. Walking up the hill to the summit from the nearest parking lot takes less than 15 minutes.

Matsudaira-go Enchi Park
Matsudaira-Area
Matsudaira-go Enchi Park is a five-acre expanse of greenery next to the main road in the village of Matsudaira, along the way from Matsudaira Toshogu Shrine to Kogetsuin Temple. The park was designed to represent the local landscape as it might have looked during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries when the Matsudaira family controlled these lands. Seasonal flowers bloom in the park from spring to autumn. There are cherry blossoms in March and April, iris and hydrangea in early summer, and bush clover (hagi) in autumn, when the red and yellow foliage also adds to the colorful scene. A small stream winds through the park into a small pond. Fireflies can sometimes be seen around the stream on evenings in June, and the pond provides a habitat for scarlet dwarf dragonflies. A path from the park’s western entrance leads to a bronze statue of Matsudaira Chikauji (d. 1394?), the founder of the Matsudaira family. Seven stone pillars stand along either side of the path. Together with the statue, they represent the eight generations of the Matsudaira family that preceded Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543–1616), the ninth head of the family who went on to establish the Tokugawa family and the shogunate that ruled Japan from 1603 to 1867. Closer to the eastern entrance is Tenka Jaya, a restaurant that serves basic meals like udon and soba noodles as well as sweets. Their tenkamochi are three small mochi rice cakes on a skewer that represent the “three great unifiers” of Japan: Oda Nobunaga (1534–1582), Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1537–1598), and Tokugawa Ieyasu. The covering of sweet red bean paste on the Ieyasu mochi cake indicates both his connection to Matsudaira-go and that he was the only one of the three who managed to establish an enduring government.

Rokusho Shrine
Matsudaira-Area
Rokusho Shrine is a Shinto sanctuary that traces its history back to Matsudaira Chikauji (d. 1394?), the founder of the Matsudaira samurai family that ruled the lands around the village of Matsudaira from the late 1300s onward. According to legend, Chikauji established the shrine on the summit of Mt. Rokusho so that the enshrined deities would watch over his family who lived in the valley below. However, the mountain itself is thought to have been worshiped as the abode of the divine since distant antiquity, and when a formal shrine was first built on it is unknown. Rokusho Shrine’s upper shrine (kaminomiya) still stands on the mountain, whereas the lower shrine (shimonomiya) is located in a valley to the northwest. Like many of the other shrines and temples associated with the Matsudaira, Rokusho Shrine enjoyed the protection of the numerous branches of the family. It held significant lands throughout the Edo period (1603–1867) when Japan was ruled by the Tokugawa shogunate, founded by Matsudaira Chikauji’s descendant Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543–1616). The buildings of the lower shrine have elements of Edo-period architecture. These include an imposing worship hall (haiden) and behind it a smaller main sanctuary (honden) whose roof is covered with thin wooden shingles. Across the road from these structures is a thatched stage built for folk kabuki and other performing arts that were popular in the region from the late Edo period until the early 1900s.

Matsudaira Castle Site
Matsudaira-Area
On a now heavily forested hill overlooking the road into the village of Matsudaira is the site of a small medieval fortress where the Matsudaira samurai family were prepared to retreat in the event that their estate down in the village should fall into enemy hands. Though known as Matsudaira Castle, this stronghold is thought to have consisted mainly of rudimentary fortifications around the top of the hill, around 300 meters above sea level, and some 70 meters above the village. The hill is thought to have been cleared and fortified sometime in the 1400s, when sections of it near the top may have been flattened and enclosed with fences where sentries could be stationed. A watchtower overlooking the road may also have been built at that time, while the dry moat that appears to have circled the stronghold is likely to have been added later. Though relatively simple, the fort is thought to have had potential as a refuge of last resort. It had its own well, provided defenders with an unobstructed view of the village below, and could be left relatively unmaintained in times of peace. Whether it was ever used in battle, however, is not known. The fortress site, which is part of the Matsudaira National Historic Site, has been reclaimed by nature, and it takes a trained eye to spot any remains of the fortifications. There is an unpaved trail to the top, and the climb takes only a few minutes.
