Shimaya Confectionery
Shimaya Confectionery
This local Matsudaira confectionery made its beginnings in 1929. And located in the area where famous shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu's roots lie, devotion to this historic leader remains strong. Tokugawa Ieyasu is known as a gongen, or a Shinto incarnation of a buddha, and based on this belief, tribute is paid to Tokugawa through the confectionery's beloved Gongen Mochi rice cakes. In addition to Japanese sweets are other treats like French madeleines, bouchées, and more.
Local Matsudaira confection: Gongen Mochi
A mochi rice cake envelops a liquid filling of ground black sesame. Chill the sweets to enjoy the sensation of the inner sauce melting into a rich, exquisite sesame flavor inside your mouth. These savory sweets took their name after Matsudaira's MVP Tokugawa Ieyasu, a gongen incarnation of the Buddhist realm.
Signature sweets: Tukinko
These fluffy, filled sponge cakes are one of the posterchild products of Shimaya. In addition to the classic custard filling, you also have your choices of matcha green tea, chocolate, blueberry, strawberry, and other flavors.
Limited-time autumn appetizer: Chestnut Mochi
These mochi rice cakes using the entire fruit of the chestnut line the shop's shelves around September every year. The Chestnut Mochi sweets are a popular draw right when the same limited-time, seasonal kuri kinton, or mashed, candied chestnuts too start calling your sweet tooth. Availability varies slightly by chestnut stock each year, so it's a safe bet to check Shimaya's official Instagram account!
