Gorge on gohei mochi outside Toyotashi Station during the Asian Games and Para Games Aichi-Nagoya!

    Toyota's gohei mochi

Ever heard of gohei mochi? It's a grilled rice cake on a stick, covered in a sweet miso sauce. While many think of it as a nationwide Japanese treat, gohei mochi is actually only available in the area of Aichi, Gifu, and Nagano Prefectures in Central Japan.
Gohei mochi rice cakes are known as a local dish in these mountainous areas and are likely to have originated in the Mikawa region of eastern Aichi Prefecture and southern Nagano Prefecture. This expanse in the middle of Japan was home to the former Ina Kaido Highway—also known as the "Chuma Kaido Highway" or "Salt Highway"—which brought salt from southern Aichi's Mikawa Bay up into the mountains of eastern Aichi and southern Nagano, where the sweet yet salty cakes would have played an important role in those transporting various goods along the long route.
The location of the Ina Kaido Highway in what is now Toyota and its continued popularity in this region help to support the theory of Toyota as the birthplace of gohei mochi.
