Tankororin Lantern Nights:
Beat the summer heat in Asuke's
candlelit, retro townscape

During certain nights each August, tall cylindrical lanterns known as "Tankororin" line nearly 1.5 kilometers of Asuke's historic townscape. Candle light flickers and dances behind the lanterns' Japanese paper, steeping the townscape in a dim, dream-like atmosphere.
Small performances too are held here and there throughout the town—from more modern guitar performances to those by shamisen, a sort of Japanese banjo, as well as stylized traditional rakugo storytelling.

About Tankororin

Tankororin lanterns are made of interwoven strips of bamboo and a Japanese paper covering. Depending on the artist, various calligraphy and illustrations are depicted on the Japanese paper, making for an even more pleasing appearance once the lights turn on.

Directions by public transportation	• From Toyotashi Station on the Meitetsu Toyota Line / Meitetsu Mikawa Line: Board from Akaike Station on the Tsurumai Subway Line or Chiryu Station and ride until Toyotashi Station. Take the Meitetsu Bus on the Yanami Line bound for Asuke. Get off at Korankei Bus Stop and walk 3 min. • Bus also accessible from Shin-Toyota Station on the Aichi Loop Line. (Board from Setoshi Station, Naka-Okazaki Station, or Okazaki Station.)
Directions by car	• Approx. 15 min. (9.5 km) east from Chikaraishi Interchange on Sanage Green Road via Route 153. • Approx. 20 min. (13 km) from Toyota-Kanpachi Interchange on the Tokai-Kanjo Expressway via Route 153.
